Did you know that XY063 and DP117 have a connection? Is it just a coincidence, or is it on purpose? Let's look at what we know, and learn something about Holy Matrimony as well!

These are the first magazine scans for XY063. I've highlighted the writer names. The scan on the left lists Shoji Yonemura and Junki Takegami. The one on the right just lists Shoji Yonemura. Now, this could just be a simple error, but it's odd they'd list two writers, when Pokemon has always just had one writer. Shoji Yonemura is listed as the official writer of the episode, and normally that would be that, but let's dig a little deeper and discover just why Junki Takegami being listed at all could be significant.

To start, Junki Takegami wrote DP117. If you click on the episode number, you'll be taken to the Rocketshippy pictures from that episode. Now that you're caught up on why that episode is so significant, here's some facts relating to that episode. Both DP117 and XY063 aired on March 5th in Japan. This might appear to be a coincidence, however another Junki Takegami episode most of you know as Holy Matrimony, (again, click on the link to see those pictures) has its own date connection.

The picture on the left is from the original episode, the middle picture is from AG029, and the picture on the right is from DP131 (They also wore them in DP132, as they were a two-part episode). The air dates of all three episodes? June 11th, 1998, June 12th, 2003,  and June 11th, 2009. That would mean the AG and DP episodes would be the 5th and 11th anniversaries, respectively. Hmm... (What was going on in 2008? Well, the nearest dates were either June 5th or 19th, so deferring to 2009 to keep the date exact makes sense to me.) The writers for all three episodes aren't the same, but the odds of those invisible outfits being worn at, or very near the same date as the original episode, seems more than a coincidence to me. In fact, it's only been referenced in one episode besides these.

This is from SM093. First, you can see the outfits are slightly different, not to mention Junki Takegami was long gone by the time this episode was made. The writer, Junichi Fujisaku, only came on during Sun & Moon, so it's likely this was just a fun past reference in an episode full of them, and not related to Holy Matrimony. But there was still something cute in it, so at least the outfits are still being assosiated with Rocketshipping.

So now that I've established Pokemon has had a history of referencing previous episodes on the same date, and Junki Takegami was listed as a co-writer of XY063 at first, it does feel likely that he had some sort of hand in the episode. But if it still feels like just a coincidence to you, then check out these Shoji Yonemura and Junki Takegami links. These are the episodes they've done that I have caps of. XY063 feels like an anomaly for Yonemura, doesn't it? The dialog feels more like something Takegami would write to me.

One last piece of interest is that XY063 is, I believe, that ONLY time Musashi and Kojiro read the title card. Now, with Pokemon having over 1,000 episodes, I can't say with absolute certainty that this is the only episode title that just the two of them read. However, I have checked almost every Rocket episode I can think of, and I haven't found another episode that only the two of them read. If you know of another Japanese title card that only Musashi and Kojiro read, please contact me via my Twitter on the right side of the page, and I'll change this section. But as of right now, just the two of them reading the title card points even more to this being a Rocketshippy episode, something that was Junki Takegami's specialty. And no, not even DP117 had that.

So, that's the curious case of XY063. We'll probably never know for sure if Junki Takegami does in fact have a connection to this episode, but there are some very interesting things connecting it and DP117. And at the very least, you probably learned something new about Holy Matrimony!
